Why Did I Decide to Start a Business?

When I was as young as 5 years old, I watched my mother apply makeup every morning before work and before every event she went to. Something about the vanity drawer that held my mother's lipstick enticed me so much that I couldn’t stay away. While my sister would line up her stuffed animals to teach them multiplication, I lined up mine to show them the brightest red lipstick.

In high school I was that girl who would come wearing a full face of makeup, completely unashamed. It landed me in good standing with an upperclassman who had her senior portraits coming up. She asked if I was able to do her makeup for the photos and BOOM! Selinas.Makeup on Instagram was opened, and I had my first photo up. (If you scroll down the bottom of my social media on Selinas.Touch you will find the photo I’m referencing). From here on out I was using my family, friends, myself, and anyone I could get a makeup brush on as an advertisement. As the school years went by, I realized I had no interests that warranted a college degree, so I made the decision to go to cosmetology school to learn hair and makeup.

Covid happened at the end of my senior year, keeping us all inside. Some of us picked up hobbies like working out, knitting, or even baking. I taught myself how to do acrylic nails. While atrocious at first, I made slow progress towards something that resembles an actual nail. I practiced on my mom, my best friend, and even my mom's coworkers who needed a fill while the world was on lockdown.

All these small moments in my life showed me I had a passion for the craft, but what made me start my own business? I don’t want to just make myself successful, my goal is to offer classes, mentor, and employ people who have the same passion that I have. Owning a business gives me the freedom to make my own schedule, set my own prices, and offer as much time to my clients as I need without a quota standard hovering over my head. There’s no financial cap to owning your own business. In the corporate world, there’s always a max to how many promotions you can get, and how much money you can make; for your own business, there is no limit, it can grow forever if ran properly. Selina’s Touch is a result of wanting to provide an experience with my clients that they can’t find anywhere else.
